How do I get gplshift to work?

I have tried to get gplshift to work but so far have had no success.
I use a custom wheel setup that is connected via a gameport. The PC recognises this essentially as a joystick with pedal axis. Works fine GPL and other racing sims.
The H shift I use is also a custom setup that is connected as a keyboard - which also houses a host of other buttons that are used in other sims. This setup works fine in other sims such as the GTR/GTL series.
To be honest, I have very little idea as to what I should be doing in order to get gplshift to work, if it is possible. What should I be doing?
